Phra Khun Paen
The Buddha Image

The Khun Paen amulet draws its name from Khun Paen, a legendary warrior and folk hero from the Ayutthaya period (c. 450 years ago), celebrated in Thai literature and oral tradition for his bravery and mystical knowledge.
However, contrary to popular belief:
The votive tablets themselves do not depict Khun Paen.
The image molded into the tablets is that of the Lord Buddha in a meditative or earth-touching (Bhumisparsha mudra) posture.
These tablets were discovered at Wat Bankrang in Suphanburi Province approximately a century ago.
The name “Khun Paen” was later adopted by amulet collectors of the early 20th century—not because the tablets represented the warrior, but because the name was widely recognized and carried cultural weight. The association helped popularize the amulets, especially among those familiar with the legends of Khun Paen’s charisma and protective qualities.
